What is the EU Regulation 2023/1230?

Regulation 2023/1230/EU replaces the previous Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC as the EU legislation defining health and safety requirements for machinery. The new Regulation:

Sets mandatory essential health and safety requirements for machinery products to be placed on the EU market.
Covers machinery, related products, and partly completed machinery.
Clarifies issues like “incomplete machinery” and “substantial modifications” compared to the previous Directive.
Aims to better address new technologies like autonomous machinery and AI-enabled safety functions.
Applies directly in EU member states without needing national transposition (unlike a Directive).
The main objective is to allow machinery on the market while ensuring a high level of health and safety protection.
The Regulation applies from 14 January 2027, with some rules like notified bodies already in effect earlier.
